The aim of the project "TRENT - Technology Scenarios for Energy Transformation" is to work out technology transformation paths based on scenarios for Austria's energy supply in close dialogue with relevant domestic actors and decision-makers, to extract highly relevant core technologies and to derive the necessary infrastructure requirements. From an economic perspective, the project aims to make the value creation and supply chains of Austrian industry visible. Strategic industrial policy recommendations for positioning Austria in the European and global context are derived from this. These are selected to suit the existing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks of domestic companies and based on a comprehensive needs analysis with regard to core technologies. TRENT thus creates a holistic view of the upcoming challenges and potential that decarbonization brings with it and provides support for a strategically smart positioning of domestic production and economic sectors in the European and global context.
Building on existing energy and climate scenarios, transformation paths for Austrian industry towards climate neutrality are developed. Methodologically, the work is mainly based on desk research and stakeholder consultations. A top-down approach is used, in which core technologies that are highly relevant for Austrian industry are extracted from the available climate and energy scenarios. These are then assessed regarding their upstream supply- and production chains and opportunities for the Austrian production landscape are derived from this.
