ZEMPSI

Zero Emission Mobility Power System Integration

Project duration:  01.02.2023 – 31.01.2024

Project partner: Chair of Energy Network Technology (EVT), University of Leoben (MUL), Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Energy Institute of the Johannes-Kepler-University Linz (JKU)

Short description of the project

E-mobility is an embedded part of the decarbonization strategy of the transport sector. However, the switch from fossil vehicles to electric vehicles is increasing pressure on our power system.

To counteract this, there are already numerous plans based on using the storage capacities of electric vehicles to create additional flexibility. Promising examples of these include V2X applications, smart charging and other novel charging methods.

Although not only grid operators and energy suppliers but also users and operators of charging stations would benefit from these technologies, it is still unclear which framework conditions the different actors need. A process involving all relevant actors is needed to identify possible challenges and to provide recommendations for action.

The ZEMPSI (zero emission mobility power system integration) project provides a complete picture of the state of the art and recommendations on how to deal with zero emission mobility power system integration in the future.

The following main objectives were defined:

  • Identification of user groups and their behaviour
  • Identification of suitable charging technologies depending on user behaviour
  • Integration of energy systems and technologies
  • Financing and legal framework
  • Validation and recommendations
  • Stakeholder analysis

The Chair of Energy Network Technology focuses on the one hand on the status quo and the challenges, on the other hand on the potential of different solutions to enable a high e-mobility penetration.

The status quo and the challenges are considered from the perspective of the energy system and the power grid as well as from the perspective of different charging technologies. Furthermore, special attention will be paid to merging the findings from both areas and exploring different approaches to find synergies and no-regret measures. In this context, we will investigate which measures are best suited to exploit possible synergy potentials with different producers/consumers, such as combinations of charging infrastructures with heat pumps and PV systems.

Founding source: This project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund, the Austrian research promotion Agency and carried out within the program "Zero Emission Mobility".
