Industrial Energy Technology

Industrial Energy Technology deals with the provision of energy. It is an engineeringcourse that focuses on the energy-related aspects of process, mechanical, and electrical engineering. The course covers the generation, transportation, conversion, storage and efficient usage of energy. A special focus is placed on renewable energy. The technical content is supplemented by a broad spectrum of business aspects such as energy management, markets and law.

Bachelor's degree

In the Bachelor's program, "Industrial Energy Technology" is similar to other courses of study at the University of Leoben in the first semesters, where great importance is attached to the engineering fundamentals. An extensive basic knowledge in disciplines such as mathematics, chemistry or physics is enormously important for further studies and distinguishes engineers of the University of Leoben. Nevertheless, energy-specific courses are embedded in the Bachelor's program. In addition to fuel and combustion engineering and thermal engineering, for example, there are courses on power plants and electrical energy systems as well as basic training in the world of business administration.

A special highlight is the energy technician's laboratory, in which practical experiments and measurements are made part of the content learned during the course.

The Bachelor's program is rounded off by four months of mandatory practical experience in order to learn how to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the business world.

Master's programme

Equipped with extensive basic knowledge from the bachelor's degree, the students in the master's degree course are able to get deep into energy technology and complete very subject-specific and practice-oriented courses. Extended contents on energy supply, energy process engineering, energy use and energy management enable students to build comprehensive knowledge on all topics relating to energy technology.

In the Master's program there are also two different optional subject blocks (general technical and business management) from which a total of 18 ECTS must be completed. This allows the student to pursue their own interests and also means that almost every graduate of our energy technology course has an individual curriculum and thus a unique knowledge background. In the Master’s program there is also an excursion, in which different enterprises in Austria are visited and the application possibilities of energy technicians in the economy are presented.

Qualification Profile/Work Areas

There is a high demand worldwide for energy technology engineers with comprehensive knowledge in industry. The study of industrial energy technology is geared towards being able to carry out all activities with a technical focus in research, apron development, product development, production, planning, sales, commissioning, maintenance and repair as well as in the operation of plants as clerk and in a managerial function in a project group up to company management. The fields of activity include, among others:

- General energy supply in industry with special consideration to sustainability and environmental compatibility

- Development and supply of renewable and alternative energy sources

- Energy conversion and industrial energy use with a high degree of efficiency

- Development and exploitation of innovative energy technologies

- Energy networks

- Economic and ecological assessments of energy efficiency and optimisation of supply

- Energy management

- Energy-oriented, sustainable specialist sales and planning activities.
