The IS2H4C project is driving the transition from industrial symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity (H4C), focusing on near-zero-emission ecosystems, resource efficiency, circular economy, promoting renewable energy integration in heavily industrialized regions across Europe. The IS2H4C project will implement its innovative model in four European hubs: Almelo & H2HubTwente in the Netherlands, the Basque Industrial Hub in Spain, the Höchst Industrial Park in Germany, and the Izmir-Manisa Hub in Turkey, each showcasing innovative industrial symbiosis strategies.

Hubs Overview

Within Work Package 2, our contribution is to develop a generic, subsector-specific approach to mapping key technologies in order to enable industrial symbiosis. The goal is to provide a structured methodology for identifying, classifying and evaluating technologies based on technical and economic feasibility, scalability and contribution to synergies. These results provide a solid foundation for creating hub-specific technology maps and will support subsequent modelling and optimisation activities within the IS2H4C project.

Within Work Package 4, we develop parts of the modelling and optimisation tools for Hubs for Circularity (H4C):

  • Waste heat profiles: Developing waste heat profiles based on State-of-the-art process routes using the Ganymed simulation tool. A special focus is on profiles tailored to the energy-intensive industries of the Basque Hub. Furthermore, the potential development of waste heat profiles resulting from the introduction of new technologies will be analysed.
  • Dynamic load profiles: Simulating and analysing dynamic load profiles for various industrial sectors. The profiles serve as input for hub-level modelling and support our simulation and assessment of industrial flexibility potential in response to grid and market signals. A further goal is to evaluate the impact of selected climate-neutral technologies by testing them in network models.
  • Agent-based modelling: Contributing to the agent-based modelling framework for assessing decision-making and interactions within circular industrial systems by supporting the definition of industrial agents.
