While the high-voltage electricity grid connects numerous generation, storage, and consumption units, current options for feeding industrial waste heat into the overall system and for supra-regional heat exchange are limited. Heat Highway investigates supra-regional district heating networks that connect multiple district heating systems and industrial waste heat sources. The concept being explored goes far beyond the current state of the art in terms of the number of involved stakeholders and regional scope.
The Chair of Energy Network Technology is responsible for developing various operational strategies for supra-regional district heating networks, as well as for investigating the Styrian use case and potential ramp-up scenarios. Additionally, the feasibility of a supra-regional industrial district heating network will also be explored.
